Fundamentally different is an amazing concept for any company. After reading this book, my boss fell in love with the culture of it and it has been a tradition to give each new employee a copy upon hire. We've all read it multiple times and truly live it as a way of life in the office. We believe that this has helped us grow as a company and deliver excellent service. Many of us adapt the fundamentals to our personal lives as well.It's an easy read and David provides real life examples on how to live fundamentally different. It's a must read!

I was given the book by a colleague that I have a lot of respect for but I was quite skeptical about any culture change process with 30 rules. David lives up to the title in the first 30 pages. I was so engaged I essentially didn't put it down till I finished the book. It is the most logical and practical process I have seen for building a great culture. It works for Ritz-Carlton, it worked for David and it will soon be working for my organization.
David Friedman has produced an easy, conversational guide to "quality" - as it pertains to workplace culture, interpersonal relationships and even personal attitudes. And aren't these all related anyway? There's no shark swimming lessons, recipes for any type of soup, nor any need to choose one's color of parachute; i.e., this is exceedingly readable and is not a plodding and narrowly focused "how to" for success in the business world. Refreshingly written, Friedman presents his Fundamentals in a common sense way, supplying sufficient examples from his career and personal like as well.
You will feel rewarded if you read this book.
This is the best book I have read in years! This is the first book On company culture that actually teaches you how to institutionalize a high performance culture inside your company step by step. We have seen an impact on employee behavior in the first month!
I really loved this book because it clearly described a process to bring the desired goal of a creating a high performance culture from a pipedream to reality! After reading this book I had a high degree of confidence in my ability to clearly describe the behaviors we want our people to have and then to implement the rituals that will allow us to get better and better at implementing these behaviors. Since company culture is so important being intentional about the culture that we want to have makes a lot of sense. The path to get that done is clearly described on this book.
Clearly this is a great book!
It shows that with the right values in life, you can go a long way.
And then, if you share it with others, great and fun things can happen.
Since I know David from when I was a young man, in my opinion there are at least 3 reasons why he has been so successful
1) A warm smile and a helping hand is extremly important if you want to reach people and important in pursuit of happiness
2) Beeing structured/disciplined and prioritize what you believe in, is better than to run around trying to become someone you are not.
3) Values are the most important tool we have to change ourselves and others.
For me, he has been a true mentor and role model for most of my adult life.
We both believe in organizations with strong values.
He gave me the best piece of advice once - "Mikael, some people just have to run a short distance to reach the their goal in life. Your path may be longer.
But if you never give up, you will get there".
For those who never will get to know him in person, take the opportunity to get to know him and his thinking by reading this great book!
Dare to be fundamentally different.
Readers can get many things out of this book and different portions of the book will resonate differently based on the readers' experiences and focus. I have listened to the audiobook twice so far and found that each time I pulled and used different fundamentals which have been very helpful to me. My current plan is to listen to the book every 6 months or so.
What resonated most for me was the goal of getting a company to perform like a well-oiled machine, working together, in sync and for a common goal. Though this seems like it should be a given, it is rarely seen or described so clearly as in Fundamentally Different. Any company, or department, or group of people working together towards a common interest, can certainly benefit from David's sage advice on how to get everyone on the same page, working towards the same goals, and in the same mindset.
I appreciated the value of corporate culture prior to reading David Friedman's book, Fundamentally Different. I struggled however, with the challenges of defining and reinforcing the behaviors that make up the culture of my company. This book provided my team the tools necessary to create a sustainable culture that has made my company more successful--a better place to work and more desirable to do business with.
After reading the book, I worked with David to develop and roll out a list of Fundamentals that fit my business. We have been practicing these fundamentals for almost a year and a half. Our employees are motivated and encouraged by the process and we've had great feedback from our customers and vendors.
This is not a "flavor of the month" business book. The ideas put forth in this book--when implemented properly--can transform the way your company goes about it's mission. My experience has been that if you choose to be intentional about defining and developing a culture that will lead to success; you will be successful.
