When the American evangelist D.L. Moody spoke in the Metropolitan Tabernacle in October 1892, he recalled an earlier visit twenty-five years previously. He had come four thousand miles, he said, to hear C.H. Spurgeon, but what impressed him most was not the sermon, nor the singing of the great congregation, but Spurgeon's prayer. Such was his access to God that he seemed to be able to bring down power from heaven. This was the great secret, Moody believed, of Spurgeon's influence and success. This collection of prayers drawn primarily from Sunday morning services at the Tabernacle will make a similar impression on readers today. Charles Spurgeon was called (and rightly so!) “the prince of preachers.” I think in large part this was because Spurgeon’s sermons were so steeped in God’s Word. But Spurgeon was also renown for his moving prayers, and again I think this is due to the biblical content that was used to weave these prayers. We get a small sample of these in The Pastor In Prayer.In D.L. Moody’s first sermon at his church in Chicago, he recounted his time visiting Spurgeon’s church. The editor of The Pastor In Prayer summarizes Moody’s words this way: “What impressed him most was not the praise, though he thought he had never heard such grand congregational singing; it was not Mr. Spurgeon’s exposition, fine though it was, nor even his sermon; it was his prayer. He seemed to have such access to God that he could bring down the power from heaven; that was the great secret of his influence and his success.”
Truly prayer is the fuel for any meaningful church activity. We are blessed to have access to these moving, fueling prayers which Spurgeon prayed over his congregation every week. We can hear echoes of his sermon, challenges to draw closer to God, calls to repentance, pleas for revival, blessings on his congregation and on his country.
Truly Spurgeon’s prayers are as memorable and moving as are his sermons!
Pastor, I urge you to read this book and follow Spurgeon’s monumental example in praying for your congregation and in calling them to bolster their own prayer life. But even if you are not in the pastorate, all Christians can be inspired to greater depth in prayer by Mr. Spurgeon’s moving, passionate prayers.

Excellent work by arguably a great preacher. My husband enjoyed this book and highly recommends.
The witness of the Spirit brings these prayers alive as I read them, and I will most often lay it down and continue the prayer time. Spurgeon's reverent awe & resounding praise of God spoken throughout his prayers in sincere humility reveals my own lack of adequate soul singing. His pleading for people & nations at the throne of grace reflects his dependent posture for God to work. I have delighted in these readings and been helped by the example of God's Word shaping the heart & prayers of a servant of God.
Prayers that are as rich sermons, passionate, and filled with Scripture. A great tool for learning to pray.
I found this collection of prayers to be soothing at times, compelling at times, familiar at times and humbling each time.
Powerful and a wonderful glimpse into the prayers of Spurgeon himself.
I can't believe this book! I read this in tears and pray the prayers in tears! All Christians everywhere can learn to pray more effectively by listening to the Holy Spirit and by seeking Jesus Christ in a deep and personal way! This book is a great starting point on how to do that! Sometimes we need to learn by example, and Charles Spurgeon is a great example.
I am still reading this but have loved it. Spurgeon was a wordcrafter, a rare gift today. There were reports that some people were touched as much or more by his pastoral prayers as with his preaching. I read a sermon as a part of daily devotional time. Interesting his concern for England's drift away from God in the 1880's. His pastor's heart bleeds through every prayer along with a deep love for lost people and it challenges me to be a better student in the school of prayer.
I read a section from this book for my morning prayer time until it was finished. It blessed my heart immensely. Spurgeon's writings are deep and thought-provoking and aid us in our time with the Lord
